The Story of Shoji Retreat

Shoji Retreat was born from a quiet dream carried across two continents.

Its founder, Emiko Sato, grew up in Kyoto, where her grandfather taught her the art of slow living—tea poured with intention, rooms arranged with space to breathe, and gardens raked with care. After years of working as an interior designer in Tokyo and later New York, Emiko found herself craving stillness again.

A visit to the Blue Ridge Mountains awakened that old memory of calm. Mist curling through pine trees. The quiet of early morning light. It felt like a place where people could reconnect—with themselves and the world around them.

In 2022, she purchased a quiet wooded lot outside Asheville and began hand-designing Shoji Retreat—a minimalist, six-room bed & breakfast inspired by Japanese Zen principles. Every detail was intentional: the bamboo-lined paths, the cloud-soft linens, the scent of hinoki in the air.

Today, guests from around the world come to Shoji Retreat to unplug, slow down, and rediscover the beauty of less.
